Berryhill Brown Hare

My Mum has always loved hares.  I can remember painting a picture of a Brown Hare for her when I was in my 20’s and she still has the painting to this day, some 25 years on.  When we moved to rural Perthshire in late 2022 our first encounter with the local wildlife was with the Brown Hare.

Our early morning walk takes us up to Berryhill woods and the single track roads that surround it. As the sun rises the hares start to appear throughout the fields and in the overgrown woods and hedgerows.

The Brown Hares are pretty big up here and they are so fast. They give Albert, our pretty speedy Cockapoo, a run for his money as he chases them across the fields shouting at them to stop! They can reach up to 45 mph and they are the fastest land mammal in the United Kingdom.

I am very fond of these animals and they really cheer me up when I see them on my walks.  Carving one in wax really was one of the most enjoyable things I have done for a while.  Watching the chunk of blue wax take on the form of a hare in full speed, leaping through the long grass, was so satisfying. It was a bit of a race to get it cast in solid sterling silver as I was so excited to see the end result, which I am absolutely thrilled with. For my Mum I have turned this piece into a two pin brooch.

The solid sterling silver hare brooch measures 53mm x 20mm at its longest and widest points and it is 3mm thick. Super chunky. Two pins are soldered onto the back to ensure it is locked safely into position. Total weight, including the pin closures, is 14.5g.

Hallmarked in Edinburgh.

The Berryhill Brown Hare Brooch will arrive in a Silverpickle gift box, tied with ribbon, and includes a little polishing cloth.
