This pendant has definitely been both a design and work of the heart. Years ago, in my teens and twenties, I used to always stamp my envelopes with decorative rubber stamps or seal them with stickers and even little handmade wax seals. I came across a box with lots of keepsakes in it, including a wax seal stamps but none with the design I had in mind. So began my search and when I found it I just knew it was the one. The design reminded me of those Love Heart sweeties from our childhood and I imagined it making a fabulous pendant using silver clay.
Having never worked with silver clay before I embarked on a very costly experiment, which started off well and then ended terribly, making me take a break from it….before it broke the bank! I then decided to try to make one in melted wax, like a proper wax seal, and get it cast in sterling silver. It was a fun experiment but it drove me insane – too big, too small, not symmetrical, too thin, too many bubbles or bulges. I frustratingly abandoned the idea for a second time.
One day I was mindlessly playing with some blutac and I got the idea that it might be the right medium to practice with. It was actually pretty good so I ordered some Fimo (a plasticine type substance you bake in the oven, ending up with a solid product) and my first try is what you see right here, in pink. I was elated with the result, it was perfect.
Once cast in solid sterling silver this pendant is really quite something, chunky and weighty with such a tactile feel about it. I solder a 1.5mm bail to each pendant for the chain to thread through. Each pendant measures 20mm across, 27mm in length (including the bail), weighs 10.6g (without the chain) and is 4mm thick.
The chain I have chosen for this piece is a chunky Belcher chain and I have given the option of 4 chain lengths so it can be worn a little longer too, if preferred. You can also choose to have the pendant oxidised (subtly blackened) if preferred. Or just stick to all silver. Both finishes are polished.
Hallmarked in Edinburgh.
Your Sealed with Love Pendant will arrive in a Silverpickle gift box, tied with ribbon and includes a little polishing cloth.
