Thistle Button Charm

The Thistle is just such recognisable part of Scotland and its history. The national flower and a symbol of strength, bravery and resillience with a fierce resistence to foreign invasion. The Thistle is also seen as a good luck charm and will protect the person carrying it.

When I came across this tiny vintage Thistle wax seal stamp, with stunning Black Onyx handle, I knew I had to buy it. I then spent time experimenting with it, making lots of wax impressions, to try and get the perfect proportions for casting it in solid sterling silver. Because I already have the Thistle Talisman necklace (which includes a chain) in my collection, I decided to make this into a weighty little ‘button’ charm.

These small but chunky charms measure 15mm in diameter and are approximately 3.5mm thick. Each charm weighs 7.5g, just under the weight for the mandatory hallmarking, but I have had each one hallmarked on the reverse. The bail at the top is perfect for a chain or perhaps some leather cord to run through, it could even be added to a keyring.

Hallmarked in Edinburgh.

Each charm will arrive in a little Silverpickle gift box, tied with ribbon, inside a cotton pouch.
